The fall-off in activity of the automobile industry in Europe and the high level of inventory are behind the decision by Saint-Gobain in Spain to suspend production on its Sekurit line for five days in April 2006. The effect of the measure will be to extend the length of the Easter break without any difference to worker“s pay packets. The break will begin on 8 April and end on 18 April 2006. Through the continuation of normal supplies to clients, Saint-Gobain managers expect to reduce excess inventory. Another effect of the move will be put back the start date for temporary workers on the so-called fifth shift, who are brought in to cover absences for holidays among the regular workforce and to fulfill the objectives of the working day reduction.
