Ecovidrio, the Spanish association of glass manufacturers, recyclers and bottlers, allocated EUR 30.8 million (USD 33.4 million) for investments in 2002, up 78% year-on-year, according to its first sustainability report published on 26 August 2003. Ecovidrio recycled half a million tonnes of glass containers in 2002, obtained from selective waste collection containers and from the bottling plants themselves. The recycling effort resulted in the saving of 663,700 tonnes of raw material for the manufacture of new glass containers. It also contributed to the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere by 223,000 tonnes. A total of 2,092 companies are members of Ecovidrio, which represents 99% of the sector with a production of 1.5 millon tonnes of glass. They cover the management costs for the recycling of the material gathered through the system of selective waste collection. The member companies of Ecovidrio agreed in July 2003 to increase the sum paid for selective waste collection, which has remained unchanged since 1998. They will pay EUR 6.24 (USD 6.77) per each 1,000 glass containers put on the market, compared to the current EUR 2.34 (USD 2.54).
