Spanish glass container makers posted a combined turnover of EUR 625.9 million (USD 740.1 million) in 2003, up 3.9% year-on-year, the president of the Spanish Association of Glass Container Manufacturers (ANFEVI), Jose Maria Salas, said on 22 April 2004. The sector results were in line with forecasts, Salas said. The sector sold 6.7 billion bottles and jars, up 3.6%, while domestic demand for glass containers rose by 3.7%. Spanish consumer bought an average of 170 bottles and jars each. The highest demand was reported for glass containers for beer, juices, vegetable oils, soft drinks, baby foods and water. A total of 29 billion glass containers were recycled. ANFEVI comprises eight companies, BA Vidrio, BSN Glasspack, Crisnova, Saint-Gobain Montblanc, Saint-Gobain Vicasa, Vidrala, Vidrieras Canarias and Vidrieria Rovira. Their output accounts for 98% of the total glass container production in Spain. ANFEVI members employ 4,000. (Note: All figures are for 2003 compared to 2002.)
