According to the latest data from Ecovidrio, during the first half of 2008, Spaniards recycled 13.6% more waste packaging glass than in the same period of 2007. The tonnage recycled rose by over 40,897 tonnes from 312,829 tonnes recovered between January and June 2007 to 353,726 tons in the same period of 2008. The increase takes the national recycling rate to over 56%, close to the goal of 60% set by the EU for the end of 2008. According to the director general of Ecovidrio, Javier Puig de Bellacasa “this trend of stable growth in glass recycling reflects a continuous effort and commitment of all citizens, government, bottlers and all those involved to make recycling glass a habit”. Recycling of glass during 2007 also experienced sustained growth with a 14% increase on the previous year, up 80,362 tons from 576,968 tons in 2006 to 657,330 in 2007. During the past five years (2003-2007) the Spanish public has increased glass recycling by over 50%, rising from 435,318 to 657,330 tons of recycled glass, i.e. 10.1 kg / per person to 14.5 kg / per person a year. Ecovidrio is a non-profit association responsible for managing the recycling of packaging waste glass throughout Spain. It is responsible for managing the collection of glass bottles through the installation of containers to facilitate the collaboration of the public. In addition, public awareness campaigns aim to encourage a reduction in the volume of waste generated.
