The South African Revenue Service (Sars) has informed of the reduction in the general“ rate of customs duty on glass ampoules from 10% ad valorem to free of customs duty. The application for the reduction of the customs duty was initially lodged because there were no Southern African Customs Union (Sacu) manufacturers of glass ampoules, especially for pharmaceutical applications, and, therefore, the customs duty contributed to the high cost of this already expensive item. Glass ampoules were previously manufactured by Anchor in the Sacu region, which has since terminated such activity. Itac recommended to the Minister of Trade and Industry that the rate of customs duty be reduced.
