Bulgarian soda ash producer Solvay Sodi, part of the Belgian chemicals and drug group Solvay, launched the BGL 140 million (USD 90.6 million/EUR 71.5 million) upgrade of its Deven thermal power plant (TPP) in Devnya at the end of September 2006, the company said. Key to the TPP upgrade is the construction of a low-emission boiler for steam generation worth BGL 40 million (USD 25.9 million/20.4 million EUR). Solvay Sodi owns 99.99 % of the Deven TPP. Foster Wheeler Energia Polska Sp, part of Foster Wheeler“s Global Power Group, has been contracted to build and install the new steam boiler. The contractor will hire Bulgarian subcontractors only, creating 250 jobs. The construction and installation of the new equipment will take two years. Parallel to the construction of the new boiler, Solvay Sodi will replace filters on two steam generators and will upgrade the existing boilers. Solvay Sodi will utilize BGL 80 million (USD 51.8 million/EUR 40.8 million) in 2007 and BGL 20 million (USD 12.9 million/EUR 10.2 million) in 2008, when the new boiler becomes operational.
