26 March 1998: While US-based Solvay Soda Ash announced in the summer of 1996 that it would increase its capacity by 400,000 tonnes in mid-1999, the plans have now been put off until the end of 2000. The Japanese press said the decision was a result of the financial crisis in Asia. Solvay Soda Ash produces 2.3 million tonnes of soda a year with Asahi Glass contributing for 460,000 tonnes. The Japanese glassmaking company controls 20% of the American soda producer compared to 80% for Solvay, the Belgian chemical group.
