Belgium“s Solvay Group has decided to extend the dense soda ash capacity of its plant in Bernburg (near Leipzig), Germany, by building a second densification line. The plant will thus be able to densify its total soda ash production as soon as the new line starts operating in October 1998. The cost of the investment is about DM 15 million. Until 1991, the Bernburg plant only produced light soda ash. Solvay then equipped it with a first densification line for 360,000 tonnes/year of dense soda ash. The second densification line will raise this capacity to 540,000 tonnes/year. In the glass industry there is now more demand for dense soda ash than for light soda ash.
