2 July 1998: A recent press report said around 100 Lebanese workers reportedly protested about what they said was a glass factory“s decision to sack them, witnesses said. The workers from the Soliver factory handed Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri a memorandum requesting his personal intervention to reverse the decision, the report said. Workers accused the factory“s management of sacking Lebanese to make room for foreign labourers who are willing to work for lower salaries. Izzat Kaddourah, the owner of the factory in the southern suburbs of Beirut, declined to comment when asked about the accusations.
