Production of caustic soda and soda ash during the first five months of 1999-00 was lower/stagnant compared to the production levels in the corresponding months of 1998-99. Prices of both chemicals declined. The Designated Authority in the Commerce Ministry of India has recommended imposition of provisional anti-dumping duties on all imports of sodium cyanide originating or exported from the US, the Czech Republic, South Korea and the European Union. The anti-dumping duty in respect of imports from the US was Rs 409 per tonne. In the case of the Czech Republic it was Rs 2,470 per tonne and in the case of the European Union (except Degussa Hills), the duty is Rs 3,339 per tonne. The duty is much higher in the case of Korea – Rs 11,460 per tonne. The Designated Authority also recommended provisional anti-dumping duty on imports of barium carbonate from China. According to the Authority, the imports of barium carbonate have increased from 1,142 tonnes in 1996-97 to 8,157 tonnes in 1997-98 and 9,778 tonnes in 1998-99. The anti-dumping duty would be the difference between Rs 17,894 per tonne and the landed price of imports per tonne.
