Production of soda ash decreased in September 2009, by 35.4% or 28,000 tons compared to 51,000 tons (100%, potash free) in September 2008, according to Ukraine Cherkasy state scientific research institute of technical and economic information in chemical industry. According to the information, in September 2009, OJSC Crimean Soda Plant reduced output of soda ash by 23.9% to 51,000 tons, while in January-September 2009, production of soda ash decreased by 32.5% or 238,800 tons to 495,300 tons year-on-year. As reported previously, production of soda ash in August 2009 dropped 23.7% or 19,000 tons compared to August 2008 to 61,300 tons (100%, potash free). Production of soda ash in 2008 increased 4.3% or 40,000 tons to 977,800 tons compared to 2007. Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is used in chemical, glass, electronic, cellulose and paper production, as well as in other industries.
