In March 2009, the Cherkasy state scientific research institute of technical and economic information in chemical industry announced that the production of soda ash in the Ukraine fell by 30.8% or 30,300 tons as compared to March 2008 to 56,700 tons. OJSC Crimean Soda Plant reduced soda ash output by 46.8% to 45,000 tons in March 2009, while OJSC Lysychanska Soda reduced by 34.8% to 11,700 tons during the same period. In the January-March 2009 period, production of soda ash dropped 32.9% or 78,200 tons to 159,400 tons year-on-year. As reported previously, the production of soda ash in February 2009 decreased 24.0% or 17,800 tons as compared to February 2008 to 56,400 tons (100%, potash free). Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is used in chemical, glass, electronic, cellulose and paper production, as well as in other industries.
