Soda ash producers in Wyoming and around the world saw an 8% drop in consumption in 2009, but demand is expected to grow over the next five years. An industry report released in mid-September forecasts demand will rise 3% through 2015 thanks to glass production in emerging economies in Asia and South America. Soda ash is used in glass, soaps and detergents, as well as in some industrial chemicals. Demand for soda ash had grown for almost ten years but dropped in 2009 partly because consumers cut back on glass purchases. The report also said that the 10.9 million tons produced by Wyoming in 2009 accounted for 24% of worldwide production, while China, which is also the largest consumer of soda ash, accounted for 42% of global production, and surpassed the US as the world“s top producer of soda ash in 2003.
