The production of soda ash in April 2009 was reported to have dropped 47.1% or 41,100 tons compared to the same period in 2008 to 46,200 tons (100%, potash free). Also in April 2009, OJSC Crimean Soda Plant reduced its output of soda ash by 27.8% to 46,200 tons. During the January-April 2009 period, production of soda ash dropped 36.7% or 119,300 tons to 205,600 tons year-on-year. As previously reported, production of soda ash decreased in March 2009 by 30.8% or 30,300 tons compared to March 2008 to 56,700 tons (100%, potash free). In 2008, production of soda ash rose by 4.3% or 40,000 tons to 977,800 tons against 2007. Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is used in numerous industries such as chemical, glass, electronic, cellulose and paper production.
