27 May 1999: Some 7,000 workers at Turkey“s glass group Sise ve Cam Fabrikalari (Sisecam) were due to go on strike recently. However, Sisecam said it had reached an accord on the last day of collective bargaining talks involving 6,300 workers. The company said in a statement increases equal to the inflation rate were secured in wages and fringe benefits for the first six months of the new two-year contract beginning from 1 January 1999. Officials from the labour union Kristal-Is said that a wage increase of 31.6% was secured for the first six months of 1999. They said wage rises in the second half of 1999 and the two halves of 2000 would also be equal to inflation rates of the previous six-monthly periods. The following companies in the Sisecam group would have been affected by the strike: Glassware producer Pasabahce Cam Sanayii ve Ticaret; glass bottle producer Topkapi Sise ve Cam Sanayii A.S.; flat glass producer Trakya Cam Sanayii; Cam-Is Madencilik; Anadolu Cam Sanayii; Cayirova Cam Sanayii and Cam Elyaf Sanayii.
