Japan“s Sekisui Chemical Co. said at the beginning of July that it has signed an exclusive deal with a major Chinese glassmaker to supply heat-blocking films for automobile windows. Sekisui Chemical concluded the deal with Fuyao Glass Industry Group Ltd., based in the eastern Chinese city of Fuqing, Fujian Province. Through the deal, Sekisui Chemical hopes to boost sales of films used on nonshatterable glass for automobiles to block both heat and ultraviolet rays, Sekisui officials said. The deal allows Sekisui to remain the exclusive supplier of the products until the end of March 2003. In China, annual demand for such films is estimated at 8,000 tons. Sekisui Chemical expect annual 10% growth in demand, as the Chinese will be required to use nonshatterable glass for automobile windows, Sekisui officials said. Fuyao now commands about 55% of the market for nonshatterable glass for automobiles in China. Overall sales of the company are estimated at CNY 1.4 billion, or about JPY 22.4 billion, for the current business year. The films were developed together with Asahi Glass Co.
