Sekisui Chemical has announced that it plans to increase its development of interlayer films for laminated glass with next-generation performance ultraviolet-radiation shielding, to be ready for an anticipated rise in demand for such films triggered by new regulations in California. The California Air Resources Board is presently mandating that automobiles sold in the state have glass that filters 47% of ultraviolet radiation as of 2014 and 60% by 2016. The standard of 47% can be reached by upgrading existing technologies, but the 60% standard requires innovative technological breakthroughs. The regulation will decrease in-car temperatures, thus reducing energy consumption for air conditioning and, in turn, greenhouse-gas emissions. This decision is also expected to be taken by other states and countries around the world.
