Talks between French glass insulators manufacturer Sediver and trade unions on the company“s plan to save 166 jobs at its plant in Saint-Yorre, southeastern France, have come to nothing, local prefect Patrick Subremon said on 5 January 2005. Management has withdrawn its plan and the factory will close, he added. The precise closure date has not been revealed. The management of Sediver“s parent, Italian glass brick producer Seves (formerly Vetroarredo) announced the closure of the French plant in January 2004 but in November put forward a plan to save 166 of the 294 jobs at risk. The plan envisaged an average pay cut of 13% and an extension to working hours of 15% for workers at the plant, conditions which were rejected by the French trade unions. On 15 December 2004, at the request of the local prefect, the trade unions agreed to talks with company management on the proposals but agreement remained elusive after eight meetings.
