Commitment to environment protection by Samsung Corning Malaysia Sdn Bhd (SCM) has been awarded the company the Prime Minister“s Hibiscus Award 2001. The award was presented by Science, Technology and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Law Hieng Ding to SCM managing director Lee Byung Rai at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur last week. A company statement said SCM was chosen for the management“s total commitment to environmental performance, development and improvement through active participation in social and community projects. The environmental initiatives taken by SCM include the elimination of benzene in the manufacturing process, reduction of electricity, oil and grease usage, minimisation of noise pollution and recycling of non-hazardous waste to alternative raw materials. The savings earned from these environmental initiatives are used to finance environmental protection, social and community services, the statement said. SCM had previously won the Caring Employer Award, in 1998 and the Negri Sembilan Social and Community Award in 1999.
