German specialty glass manufacturer Schott plans to increase its share of Japan“s market for industrial optical fiber to 20% by 2010 from 4% at present, thereby becoming one of the country“s market leaders. Schott plans to capitalize on its integrated production framework ranging from raw material melting to assembly, and intends to develop markets by building cooperative relationships with advanced technology manufacturers in Japan. Schott has already secured Olympus as one of its five top customers in this sector, for whom it will supply optical fibers for stereoscopic microscopes and medical endoscopes. In the automotive sector, Schott will actively develop demand for interior data communications and lighting. It also aims to expand use of its optical fibers in the engine compartment, which is a testing usage environment for its products.
