At the beginning of August, optical interconnect authority Schott Optovance unveiled its newest product in its fibre management portfolio devoted to compact fibre routing, the Light Dealer(TM) mini fibre fan-out assembly. The Light Dealer(TM) features a very compact transition area size of about 1 inch in length and a diameter of typically 0.2 inches, resulting in a 50% space-savings over other conventional assemblies. Satisfying the need for transitioning ribbon fibre to single fibre assemblies in a small space, this new product is designed to enable denser solutions for network equipment vendors, such as switch and router manufacturers, and component makers of passive components like arrayed waveguides (AWGs). With such a space advantage, the Light Dealer(TM) mini fibre fan-out assembly eases fibre management issues and space constraints that exist at the component, board and back-plane level for designers. For example, with a more compact fibre fan-out assembly there is more space available to integrate more functionality on a board without sacrificing capabilities. “We continue to see the need for much smaller and flexible fibre management solutions and with our optical interconnect expertise we believe we are very qualified to deal with alleviating fibre chaos in the central office,” said Trish Dawson, Director of Sales and Product Management for Schott Optovance. “The Light Dealer(TM) is a very cost competitive product as a result of the proprietary manufacturing techniques that have been mastered with our Optical Shuffle(TM) fibre management product. This provides the opportunity to OEMs, contract manufacturers, and cable assemblers to reduce their costs and complexities by outsourcing the manufacture of ribbon fan-outs to Schott Optovance.” US Schott Optovance, Inc. is a privately held optical interconnect company that redefines high-density optical interconnects for the component, board and back-plane level. Schott Optovance is a strategic US unit of the Schott Group (Germany) and is responsible for telecom and datacom components and developing extensive intellectual property. Schott Optovance is a subsidiary of Schott Corporation, whose base product is special glass. Schott Corporation is the North American headquarters for the Schott Group and has 16 divisions and subsidiaries employing approximately 3,200 people. The Schott Group employs nearly 20,000 people worldwide and has sales of approximately US$2 billion.
