Extending the Optical Shuffle(TM) product family into a new market segment, Schott Optovance, Inc. an optical interconnect company, introduces its Optical Shuffle(TM) for PLCs. Schott Optovance“s Optical Shuffle(TM) for PLCs is a compact fibre management product that interconnects high-channel count devices. The product, which aligns fibre ribbons to waveguides and re-routes the fibres, will initially be used for AWGs. According to Communications Industry Researchers, Inc. (CIR), the market for Integrated Passive DWDM Products will account for US$ 103 million in sales by 2005. These products are devices that combine some kind of filter, grating or waveguide with one or more additional functionality such as variable attenuation. Interconnecting high-channel passive and integrated devices has often meant dealing with complex and costly fibre management, which takes more space than the devices themselves. The Optical Shuffle(TM) for PLCs features a unique very compact ribbon design, which affords the designer more flexibility in board design and allows the use of parallel connectors for additional space savings at the card edge. Since space is at a premium, the Optical Shuffle(TM) for PLCs not only solves the problem of interconnecting, but also of rerouting and reordering fibres when the channel-to-channel pitch on the PLC is different from the pitch of a fibre ribbon – as is commonly the case with AWGs. Schott Optovance offers its Optical Shuffle(TM) fibre management product for PLCs with industry standard terminations and in various design configurations. The Optical Shuffle(TM) for PLCs has already been designed in for use by several AWG manufacturers. The Optical Shuffle(TM) for PLCs is used for a fibre pitch of 250 and 127 micron. This new Shuffle can also be used for other high-channel devices, such as VOAs and Dynamic Gain Equalizers (DGE). Schott Optovance, Inc. is a privately held optical interconnect company that redefines high-density optical interconnects for the component, board and backplane level. Headquartered in Southbridge, Massachusetts, US. The company is a strategic US unit of the Schott Group (Germany) and is responsible for telecom and datacom components and developing extensive intellectual property. Schott Optovance is a subsidiary of Schott Corporation, whose base product is special glass. Schott Corporation is the North American headquarters for the Schott Group and has 16 divisions and subsidiaries employing approximately 3,200 people. The Schott Group employs nearly 20,000 people worldwide and has sales of approximately US$ 1.8 billion.
