German-based Schott Glaswerke announced on 2 January that its sales in the fiscal year to 30 September 1996 were US$ 1.8 billion (DM 2.7 billion). According to Schott, sales for the company“s businesses outside Germany increased 8%, while sales at its German units fell 6% because of economic conditions in the country. At its US unit, Schott Corp., sales fell 2% to US$ 328 million, but operating profits increased on its performance in optical glasses, fibre optics for message signs and lighting applications, and special glasses for appliances. As a private company, the company does not disclose its profits, a spokeswoman said.
