16 October 1997: The Governor of the state of Pennsylvania, Tom Ridge, recently announced the granting of a US$1 million economic assistance loan to Schott Glass Technologies Inc. for their acquisition of the former Topps Co. facility in Duryea, Luzerne County. “It has been a priority for me to bring jobs back to the Topps facility. This world class company has decided to expand here in its hometown, creating more good jobs for Pennsylvania residents,” Ridge said. Ridge said the US$1 million Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA) loan constitutes the first phase of a state economic assistance package. The company now employs 433 workers at an adjacent site, and plans to add 181 new jobs through the US$4.3 million project. Schott Glass Technologies Inc. manufactures precision optical, opthalmic, laser and special glass products with a variety of consumer, scientific and defence-related applications.
