Some 600 monthly paid employees of San Miguel Corp. (SMC) are set to receive more than PHP 100 million in wage increases and other benefits under a new, three-year collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB) reported on 26 March. This was decided after management and the San Miguel Corp. Employees Union (SMC-EU) ironed out disagreements in a conciliation meeting last week. In a memorandum of agreement signed on 21 March SMC agreed to give a PHP 2,000 per month wage increase effective July 2001, as well PHP 1,500 and 1,200 effective 2002 and 2003, respectively. It will also give a onetime PHP 25,000 grant to all covered employees, NCMB records show. SMC-EU, which is federated with the Philippine Transport and General Workers Organization, meanwhile, agreed to withdraw a notice of strike filed last 7 March formally ending the labor dispute. SMC had previously inked a new CBA with its daily paid workers belonging to the Ilaw at Buklod ng Manggagawa sa San Miguel Corp.
