Korea“s Samsung Corning Co., Ltd. announced on 14 November that it has succeeded in developing a multi-layer-coated precision glass. The specialty glassmaker will invest 10 billion won for the project and start mass-production from August 2000. The bulk of the output will be supplied to domestic flat-panel display manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Daewoo Electronics. In the second stage of production, Samsung Corning will export some products to Japan“s Toshiba and Matsushita. The new product, known to block electromagnetic waves and protect human eyes, is formed by bonding layers of extra-thin film on a glass plate 0.5 to 3 millimetres thick. Samsung Corning currently takes 35% of the world“s coated glass market. The world market for multi-layer-coated glass is expected to grow 20% every year, expanding to US$ 167 million in the year 2005.
