Korean company Samsung Corning Co. Ltd., manufacturer of glass for TV tubes, has announced the beginning of expansion work for the STN ITO coating plant, which will cover a total area of 3,250 sq. m., and produce approximately 6 million pieces per year in the Gumi Industrial Complex. Samsung says that the expansion work for the STN ITO plant, designed to launch the business of digital display coating, should begin commercial operations in July 2001. On completion, the company, along with its existing four lines, will also have a state-of-the-art automated line, while the new production facilities will be using the in-line system. The new line, in addition to the in-line system, will also be equipped with the sputtering membrane forming system, thus producing STN ITO, Touch Panel ITO, reflective STN ITO and PDP ITO. Current annual capacity should go from the existing 18 million pieces to 24 million per month once the lines are completed. This 33% increase is forecast to produce a continuous supply of raw materials to domestic and overseas customers. Samsung Corning“s goal for high-efficiency production is to increase the localization ratio of the facilities from 20% to 80% by means of co-operation from its subcontractors.
