Production from the new pilot furnace at the Saint-Gobain flat glass plant at Avils, northern Spain will not begin until 2009, according to company plans. Building work for the furnace began in October 2007 and will continue throughout 2008. The new furnace will be 180 meters long, double the size of the current installation, which will cease operation when the new line starts. The new equipment has a projected working life of five years, the same as planned for the pilot furnace that is about to close but which in reality worked for ten years. The new furnace will work day and night, 365 days a year and will generate 15 jobs.
