Saint-Gobain Glass has deployed a solution from Private Mobile Networks Ltd, a UK provider of private GSM network technology, at the Saint-Gobain manufacturing and warehousing facility in North Yorkshire, UK. According to the company, the deployment of a Private Mobile Network as a DECT replacement solution using standard mobile handsets has resulted in wider coverage, from 50-60% achieved with DECT, to almost 100% across all parts of the site. This has been achieved using 8 Base Transceiver Station units, compared to the 17 base stations previously required for the DECT installation. As the PMN solution is based on standard GSM technology, Saint-Gobain is considering a future option of integrating the network with the plant control room to enable relevant staff to be notified by SMS text messages in the event of a plant alarm. Currently, control room staff issue notifications by telephone.
