Pascal Chartier, an engineer from French glass maker Saint Gobain Glass, has been awarded the 2003 Chereau-Lavet Grand Prix for engineering innovation for his self-cleaning glass invention, the award organisers said on 3 December 2003. The glass stays clean through the action of sunlight breaking down surface dirt, which can then be washed off by rainwater. The jury of the Prix Chereau-Lavet, which each year rewards a French engineer for a major innovation confirmed by market performance, is composed of outstanding representatives of science and industry, company managers, and leading figures from academia.
