Trade union representatives at Saint-Gobain Cristalera in Aviles, northern Spain on 8 January 2009 requested a meeting with the leadership of the French multinational, as a matter of “urgency” to know their estimates of activity for the first half of 2009. “We want to know if they will stick to what they had announced,” said the committee. According to the same sources, after production restarted on 7 January 2008 in the Sekurit area of the plant, workers needed to know “what happened this time” and whether there had been changes in the projections that had been put forward at the end of 2008. “Sekurit started with two lines instead of three, it was well planned, but we want to clarify whether the forecasts from the end of the year can be maintained now”, workers“ representatives said. “Two lines are working alternately according to demand”, explained the union representatives in reference to arrangements for the windscreen production lines which came into effect on 1 November 2008.
