Saint-Gobain assured clients that supplies of flat glass were “absolutely guaranteed” from other plants in the group following the fire which destroyed the furnace at the Avils plant in northern Spain on 12 March 2008. The group said it was unable to say how long the furnace would be out of action; clients will be supplied in the meantime from the group“s other Spanish and European plants. The company said the resources of the group were being made available to speed up the the repair process. Sources among the workforce said rebuilding the furnace would take around three months. The company has already suspended supplies of sand, dolomite, limestone, sulphate and feldspar to the Avils plant. The company praised the workforce, firefighters, medical staff and neighbouring companies for their efficient help immediately after the incident and said the procedures set up for this kind of situation worked perfectly. There were no serious injuries although two workers received treatment for minor burns.
