Partial strikes by the workforce of Spain“s Saint-Gobain Cristalera are set to continue from 10 May 2005 as talks with management on the collective contract remain deadlocked. The stoppages begin again on 10 May 2005 with workers downing tools for two hours during each shift. The action will be repeated on 12 May and 14 May 2005. In the week commencing 16 May 2005, unions will decide on their next move. The strike action has the backing of all the unions, who are hoping for a continuation of the very high level of support registered for the first stoppages. In company plants, 100% support was reported while in the Madrid HQ, 60% of the workforce took action, a difference attributed to the number of HQ workers outside of the collective contract. Unions say that after several years of pay restraint, and in view of company profits, pay needs to rise above the consumer price index. A recent company proposal for a monthly raise of EUR 27 per worker was rejected by unions as insufficient.
