Spain“s Saint-Gobain Cristalera announced on 2 May 2008 that it had reached agreement in principle with unions CCOO and UGT on the collective contract which affects its five centers in Avils (Asturias), Arbs (Tarragona), Azuqueca (Guadalajara), Madrid and Renedo (Cantabria). The secretary of the Avils Fitema-CCOO union branch, Jos Mara Lombarda, welcomed the agreement in principle on the collective contract given the situation of the major incident at the Avils plant. Mr. Lombarda said the positive aspects of the accord are the proposal of early retirement at 60 years, the rise of 0.25% above the RPI applied to wage rates, and that 0.55% of the wage sum is to go to increasing the bonuses for attendance by 17%, night working by 8.5% and Saturday working by 35%. He added that there were improvements to social benefits such as grants and life and invalidity insurance. The agreement in principle will have to be ratified by workers at meetings convened for the week beginning 5 May 2008 and in the subsequent drafting of the text of the agreement reached.
