Saint-Gobain Cristalera is to apply the Du Pont safety model at its plant at Avils in northern Spain following the recent fatal accidents at its plants in the country. The company wants to have the system up and running from March 2008 and several Du Pont technicians have already started supervising procedures to enhance safety at the glass plant. For their part, hundreds of workers gathered at the factory entrance on 14 February 2008 to commemorate 53 year-old Manuel Segurado, who died after 15 days in coma following an accident at the Avils plant. Those present also remembered Santos Moreno, who died earlier in 2008 in an accident at the company“s facility in Guadalajara, near Madrid. Management was not represented at the commemoration. Du Pont technicians are supervising the installations at the Avils plant to improve safety while the outcome of the investigation into the accident is awaited. Managers decided to adopt the Du Pont system in response to the accidents without consulting unions. Du Pont is considered a model company in the adoption of safety measures, although the company is reportedly seen less favorably by unions for its handling of accidents.
