Unions and management at Saint-Gobain Cristalera in Spain on 17 March 2009 signed the new collective contract which was agreed in principle on 4 March. The agreement is valid for one year. CC.OO union representative Jose Maria Lombarda said the agreement includes the full text of the current agreement plus a wage increase of 1.5%; this figure may be increased if the real consumer price index exceeds 1.5% but cannot be reduced. Mr. Lombarda said the proposal “is not the one that the unions wanted,” but said that the organizations were aware of the challenges of the current situation. He further said that it was clear that the company wanted to end negotiations, so at the last meeting, held on 4 March 2009, “we had to reach an agreement in principle or break off negotiations”. The preagreement was approved by union members at mass meetings, thus clearing the way for the final deal.
