23 April 1998: The French manufacturer Saint-Gobain is expected to invest around FFr 600 million in Colombia, to build a float glass production line with daily capacity of 500 tonnes. The company will join the British firm Pilkington, and will form a 75% holding company to own the majority share of the plant (51% owned by Saint-Gobain and 49% by Pilkington) which is expected to come on stream in 2000. The remaining 25% will be owned by the Colombian firm Sur Americana. Pilkington“s joint ventures with Saint Gobain in South America currently operate five float lines: three in Brazil, one in Argentina and one in Chile, with a total capacity in all three countries of approximately 700,000 tonnes per year of float glass. Pilkington said the current level of demand in Colombia is approximately 120,000 tonnes per year.
