13 November 1997: A Scottish company, Safeglass Europe Ltd., has developed a new kind of “safe glass” which separates into harmless fragments if it is broken. The “safe glass” has passed trials on the Glasgow Underground, where it is now in use in the casings of emergency stop handles in trains. It is also being developed for a new rail company owned by British entrepreneur Richard Branson. The glass is currently manufactured in England although Safeglass hopes to soon set up production in Scotland. Funding for a Scottish base has been granted by local authorities and by the European Regional Development Fund.
