Saudi Arabian Sabic Europetrochemical is to raise production capacity of its long glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene to 35,000 meter/year at Genk, Belgium, according to a company statement 1 July 2003. The polymer is marketed by Sabic under its trademarked Stamax P brand. A second production line would be added to the compounding facilities at Genk, operated by its subsidiary Stamax BV. Construction work has begun recently and is scheduled for competion in 2004, the company said. Stamax P is a thermoplastic aimed at structural applications, typically used in the automotive industry, in which it replaces steel and other composites. Sabic announced 1 April 2003 an agreement to acquire full ownership of Stamax BV from its former joint venture partner, Owens Corning. Under the April deal, SABIC produces StaMax P composite material under license from Owens Corning and has exclusive production and sales rights of StaMax P for the European market.
