A Sino/American joint venture, operating under the name of Praxair Shanghai Meishan, currently operates an air separation plant at Nanjing, China. The partners in the operation and their respective shareholdings include, Praxair, Inc. of the US (70%) and the local Baostell Shanghai Meishan Iron & Steel (30%). The partnership recently announced its intention to build a second such plant at the same site. As a result, the consortium will reportedly increase its oxygen output by 70%. In so doing, most of the additional oxygen will reportedly supply a planned increase in steel production by Shanghai Meishan. The project, of undisclosed cost, is scheduled for completion by some time during the first quarter of the year 2003. Praxair employs a total staff of about 23,400. The company is engaged in the manufacture of various gases for metal fabrication, chemicals, refining, food and beverage as well as the semiconductor and health care industries.
