2 April 1998: US group PPG Industries recently produced an all-glass laminated side cockpit window for the Saab 340 aircraft, which the company says should provide operators with service life and system cost advantages previously unavailable. Certified by Swedish Air Worthiness Authorities and the Federal Aviation Administration, the window was developed in cooperation with Saab to complement PPG“s main Saab 340 windshield, and provide operators with cost, design, performance and service benefits, according to Jean-Marc Coursieres, director of PPG aircraft sales for Europe. “Our all-glass Saab 340 side cockpit window uses design and materials shown to provide high service life in windows we supply for other regional aircrafts such as the ATR-42,” said Coursieres. “As a result, it will outperform competitive products,” he added. The Saab window has three plies of PPG“s Herculite II chemically tempered glass for a significantly higher strength-to-weight ratio than thermally tempered glass, according to William Hornsey, senior design engineer.
