Worldwide supplier of automotive and flat glass, automotive, industrial and packaging coatings, fibreglass, chemicals PPG Industries recently introduced its new self-cleaning glass, SunClean, which is coated with titanium dioxide. When exposed to ultraviolet rays from the sun, it breaks down dirt, allowing it to wash away when hit by rain or water from a garden hose. Properties in the coating also eliminate spots and streaks. PPG, which has been developing the product since 1996 at its research centre in Harmarville, US, said it was in discussions with several window manufacturers that may use the new glass in 2002. It estimated that SunClean windows would cost about 20% more than standard windows.
