Employees of PPG Industries started a strike on 6 July 2009 at its Saultain facility in northern France. According to trade unions, one of the protesters has even resorted to hunger strike. The unrest was caused by the group“s plan to eliminate 200 jobs at Saultain and another 40 positions at the Marly plant in the same region. The two sites employ a total of 690 people. Negotiations are presently ongoing regarding the amount of redundancy compensation.
