PPG Industries Inc. is seeking a multi-million dollar contract to supply glass for One World Trade Center, the Freedom Tower, a spokesman for the Pittsburgh-based company confirmed 21 January 2009. If the bid is successful, employees at its 415-worker plant in South Middleton Township, Pennsylvania would fill the order. The firm spent several thousand dollars designing a glass product that would be used for the facade of the lower five floors of the 102-floor, 1776-foot high building being put up in Lower Manhattan, spokesman Jack Maurer said. He said a furnace at the South Middleton operation was modified for the product. The tower is scheduled to open in 2012 and will replace the World Trade Center destroyed on 11 September 2001.
