Glass fabricator J.E. Berkowitz, LLP, and PPG Industries have agreed to co-market the Renovate by Berkowitz, LLC (RbB) system, an on-site window retrofitting system that converts installed single-pane windows into energy-saving, triple-glazed insulating glass units (IGUs) that cost significantly less than traditional, ripped-out-and-reglazed replacement windows. The RbB system features J.E. Berkowitz“s Renovate Platinum Plus, a patented window retrofit technology that hermetically seals a factory-made IGU to an existing monolithic glass window. The IGU is made with separate lites of Solarban 60 solar control, low-emissivity (low-E) glass and Sungate 500 passive, low-E glass by PPG, separated by an argon-gas-filled cavity. By adding two low-E surface coatings to an existing window unit, Renovate Platinum Plus provides heat-trapping R-values in the winter that are up to six times greater than those for clear monolithic glazings, and insulating U-values in the summer that reduce solar heat gain coefficients by up to 65%. The result is year-round heating and cooling cost savings of about 20 to 25% on average. In addition to cutting energy use and traditional window-replacement costs, the RbB system reduces noise and increases security. It also can help building owners earn tax credits, utility rebates or points toward LEED certification. J.E. Berkowitz and PPG will jointly market the RbB system through multiple promotional vehicles. The system is supported by a certified dealer/installer network and backed by a 10-year warranty through J.E. Berkowitz.
