UK Glass giant Pilkington is to make a 20% saving on its network expenditure following the implementation of a high availability, multi-technology network by Vanco. The global Virtual Network Operator (VNO) beat off competition from ten bidders, including AT&T and WorldCom, to win the three-year, EUR 10 million contract. The Packaged Network solution is based on infrastructure from 14 different carriers, which will initially serve 152 sites in 17 countries. The network is highly business-critical in that it runs specialist applications linked to the manufacture and distribution of flat glass. Information is regularly exchanged between Pilkington`s data centres in the UK, Germany, Italy and the US, requiring the network to have high levels of resilience and availability. Vanco was selected for its ability to centralise control of the network, standardise and improve service delivery, as well as provide the lowest lifetime cost.
