29 July 1999: Britain“s Pilkington Plc, one of the world“s largest float and automotive glassmakers, said its new year had started well. In Building Products, prices in Europe have been relatively flat and sales to date are similar to last year, on a lower cost base, but the market is now picking up, added chairman Nigel Rudd in remarks made at the group“s annual shareholders meeting. He said that with Brazil, Argentina and Chile in recession, South American building product sales volumes were some 10% down on last year but prices had been quite stable. In North America, construction activity stayed strong and prices firm, and Australia had a reasonable start. In its automotive glass division, sales volumes in Europe were good, shipments to main customers in North America strong, and the Australian market buoyant, but automotive glass plants in Brazil were still operating well below capacity. “In the light of our experience to date and provided economic conditions in our main markets remain stable, I am confident Pilkington will demonstrate further progress this year,” Rudd said.
