Flat glass manufacturer Pilkington San Salvo (Chieti, central Italy) is suffering the effects of the global crisis in the automobile sector. During a meeting held 10 November 2008 at the Industrial Association of Vasto, the company announced its intentions to trade unions: extended layoffs from 22 November to 7 December ahead of the stoppage already agreed from 22 December to 7 January and in addition, the closure of four departments. In this case, 100 jobs would be lost, in addition to the 120 temporary posts lost through the non-renewal of contracts in October 2008. Unions are opposed to the measures.
