British glassmaker Pilkington Plc expanded its operations in Poland recently by opening a UK 25 million car glass plant. “Our further investment in Sandomierz, the automotive glass factory, have been made because of the size and potential of the Polish market,” Pat Zito, head of Pilkington“s automotive glass operations, said during the opening ceremony. The new plant will make about 700,000 sets of car windows annually. Most of the output will be sold to car makers in Poland – Fiat, Adam Opel and Daewoo . Pilkington has invested nearly US$ 300 million in Poland. Its Polish subsidiary, Pilkington Sandoglass based in the central city of Sandomierz, also operates a traditional and float glass plant. The firm employs about 1,500 people and its annual turnover is expected to reach Zl 500 million (US$ 122.2 million) this year, said Joanes Borup, Pilkington“s country manager in Poland.
