A total of 52 jobs are being cut at the Pilkington glass facility at Estover near Plymouth, south-west England. The company announced the lay-offs on 5 December 2008 as part of an “ongoing business review”. In a statement, Pilkington said: “As a result of the ongoing business review, the company regrets to announce proposals to cease manufacturing operations at Pilkington Plymouth and to reduce the workforce by 52 employees”. “The main reason for this decision is the downturn in the window replacement market nationally and the consequent sharp reduction in demand for Insulating Glass Units across the UK”. “A loading and distribution service will operate from the site and it is expected that nine employees will be required to run this”. “The company will seek alternative opportunities for existing employees, as well as offering outplacement support”. “The target date for completion of this will be the end of December”.
